Southern Modifieds Loses A Great Driver And Friend

A motorcycle accident claims Brian Pack's life Friday July 25th around 1:45pm. Brian was a great Modified driver who race weekly at Bowman Gray Stadium and was a regular racer on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Tour.

Brian will be missed by many of his friends and by the fans of the Modified tour.

Pack was a 14-year racing veteran in the modified series at Bowman Gray Stadium. His car was No. 81. He'd won two races, including one last June and another in 2002.

Pack had no wins so far 2008, but he was in 5th place in the points standings at Bowman Gray and 14th on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.

He leaves behind his wife, Julie, and three sons, Austin, Brandon and Zach. Pack's father, Gene Pack, is a longtime driver in the sportsman division. "Brian is probably the most easygoing, laidback guy," friend David Sell said. "Nicest dude you'd ever want to meet."

Friends were having a difficult time after hearing the news Friday night. "Everybody's taking it very hard," Sell said. "It's a shock." Friend Chip Johnson said Pack was a fierce competitor on the track and a great father off the track. Sell said the Bowman Gray family will find it hard to believe the news at Saturday night's race. Johnson said he got a No. 81 sticker by which to remember his friend.
